Elijah's Warning
Elijah’s Warning
Throughout the land of Israel,
In wicked Ahab’s reign;
His wife, the evil Jezebel,
Had God’s true prophets slain.
From God’s commands the people strayed;
Adulterous Israel,
Did worship idols they had made;
They sacrificed to Baal.
Elijah warned them to repent,
Or there would be no rain,
Except it be at his consent;
The warning was in vain.
Three years the famine was severe;
The grass was parched and dry.
All Israel was filled with fear;
Their cattle would surely die.
Elijah returned at God’s command,
To Ahab he must go;
For God would send rain to the land,
The true God they would know.
The people were gathered at Mt. Carmel;
Elijah said, "Decide,
You can’t serve God and also Baal;
This, God will not abide!"
So all the people then agreed,
A sacrifice to make;
To prove which one was God indeed,
And which of them was fake.
Baal’s prophets began, their flesh, to tear,
And all day they did call;
Elijah prayed a simple prayer,
And fire, from God, did fall.
So, through Elijah, God had turned
The people back to Him;
Their fathers’ God, whom they had spurned,
Had not deserted them.
Today, as in Elijah’s days,
We have no time to lose;
We cannot halt between two ways;
God says that we must choose!
